QUICK 10-TIP GUIDE TO TULUM:

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

1) Rent a car. Priceline has some of the cheapest prices I’ve found. I picked up my car from Cancun Airport and drove 1.5 hours to Tulum. It is a simple, straight shot down Rt. 307. Choose the option to pay upon arrival and insurance upon arrival too. I say upon arrival because I read about some scamming situations where they double charge you. Also parking is not much of an issue in Tulum as they have plenty of space and don't ticket or tow cars.

2) If you’re not staying on the hotel strip ( which is a little pricier), then stay in Aldea Zama or Downtown. Airbnb’s here are usually bigger, cheaper, and more private. Plus, many of them run as hotels with their own amenities. I stayed in the Holistika area, but it ended up being a little further away and not as developed/constructed.

3) Bring cash & exchange it @ the Cancun airport unless you already got it from your bank. Most places take pesos only (yes, even gas sometimes).

4) Try a beach club. Depending on your vibe (party, chill, bougie, or budget-friendly) There is pretty much a beach club for all the above. Some require a fee & others don’t. I visited three of them:

  • Taboo (party vibe) $100 USD cover. From that, $50 goes towards your own sunbed/table and the other $50 goes towards food & drink. They also have hookah.

  • Ziggy’s- (can be chill or party vibe)- No cover, just buy food/drinks

  • Coco beach club- (chill/bougie) - $25 cover for a sunbed, but you can also just lay out in the open air restaurant and order any item no minimum charge

5) Try a bar/restaurant downtown with some locals. I was nervous about doing this solo but it turns out that Tulum is pretty safe. Try the following:

  • Batey’s Mojito y Guarapo Bar- they play live music

  • Pasito Tun Tun- really cute spot with some swing seating & garden patio, (and it is affordable) - live Dj’s after 10 PM

6) Explore the Holistika area. It is not as developed as other areas in Tulum because it’s newer and construction is still happening. Tulum has a large spiritual/natural/holistic community and they host retreats and meditative practices all over this specific area. I personally stayed in this area and would recommend the following restaurant: Off the Vine.

7) BUY BUG SPRAY!!

8) Visit the lagoons and cenotes! This was my favorite part of the entire trip. So much beauty in these places and perfect excursions/activities for solo travelers! I was told by tourists that the Dos Ojos cenote and the Kaan Luum Lagoon were a must! I was not disappointed.

9) Whatever you do, you must get tacos. Also must try the following three restaurants:

  • La Taqueria

  • Burritos Beer

  • Burrito Amor

10) Explore The Archaeological Sites and/or Art Museums. I personally did not do these during my own trip but saw a lot of tours to the Tulum Archaeological Zone. I also saw some signs for what looked like cool museums out there.
